LinkedIn August 30th, 2007

A couple of months ago, Facebook reached a new “tipping point” of popularity and properly took off in the UK. This month, LinkedIn looks like it is going to do the same. Our prediction is that MySpace/Bebo will win out as the fun, younger networking sites and LinkedIn will replace Facebook as the networking method of choice for older professionals getting a bit bored with Zombies and Poke Me’s. Darn, we’ve only just persuaded a load of distant colleagues to be our “friends” on Facebook….

The Aussies really know how to do pie, mash, peas and gravy.

Sellaband August 23rd, 2007

We’ve just bought shares in a couple of bands at Sellaband.

The super indie-pop/rock/hybrid combos we’ve invested in are Trail and Agentx.

At Sellaband you buy a share of a band (in our case $10) and when the band have raised $50,000 they go into the studio and record their first album - which of course always goes on to sell billions worldwide, making us early “believers” incredibly rich in the process.

1/5000th share of a global pop phenomenon? Now that’s rock n roll.

At the moment, we’re a lot closer to our goal of retiring early with Trail, who have already raised $23,110.

Agentx are a little further behing having raised $110 so far - but with hair that big, we know the lead singer isn’t going to let us down.

Noise Criminals August 22nd, 2007

Adam R’s suggested re-design of a London tube ticket….

…which then appeared in The Guardian and became a t-shirt….

…and is now part of an anti-noise pollution campaign in Holland…

alexanders-message.png

Dutch revolutionary Alexander Klopping got in touch to say “I hope you’re just as enthusiastic about starting a movement in the Netherlands as I am. We have to stop the noise criminals!”

Dude. We’re there mate. Behind you 100%.

Pay peanuts, save monkeys August 21st, 2007

Some of you may have recently read in the papers about the tragic slaughter of gorillas in Virunga National Park, in the Congo DRC. Well, this is the exact place that William (who wrote a blog about the curious incident of the log in our bog) has been doing so much work with Wildlife Direct. It’s great that they’re finally getting exposure in the national papers, but obviously terrible that it had to happen in these circumstances.

The good news is that there’s plenty you can do to help: a donation of $60 will buy the Rangers much needed patrol tents, $35 will buy them a pair of boots, $25 will provide them with much needed first aid kits, and $15 will provide them with rations. A lot of the Rangers run their own blogs (Atamato, Elie, Paulin, Joseph), which let you see exactly where your money’s going, and unlike many charities, what you donate goes straight to the field. So if you’re having difficulty sleeping, or just fancy doing some good to impress a lady, it’s well worth taking a look. (Alternatively you can help Will out and donate $100 for a Dictaphone he needs to keep him on top of things.)

You can also join Will’s cause on Facebook, where he’s already raised over $1000. Just click here, and then click “Gorilla Protection” in the bottom left.

On a personal note, hello Will – I hope all’s well. Please feel free to correct any factual inaccuracies I’ve made.

Love Magnets August 20th, 2007

Some time ago, a friend posted a link to a site that was essentially an online interactive magnet game. It was made with a Flash Communication Server.

Recently after reading up on Remoting gateways I decided to build one entirely with Amfphp. Depending on how many people are using it simultaneously, it can be quite fun.

UPDATE: 31/08/07
This is the last thing I will do with these magnets, I swear. I have re-coded it in AS3, and finally got around to building my first AIR app. You will need to Adobe Integrated Runtime for either Windows or Mac OS.

Why not play with Desktop Magnets here. or the online AS2 version here.

Thanks Kathryn. Have a nice weekend.

Always The Last To Know August 16th, 2007

Tincanphone
London, England-based trade title Campaign have apparently written about our account win for global football brand Umbro. We say apparently, because we haven’t read it yet. Campaign doesn’t get to Manchester, England until Friday. Instead, Gareth in Boston, USA told us about it last night as did Terry in Bangkok. Chuffed to bits about the win. We now just need to work out how to log in to “Campaign Online” so we can read about stuff at the same time as the rest of the world.

Designer Slash Model August 15th, 2007

With all this talk of new jobs going on it’s well worth considering this beautiful piece by digital kitchen before you send us your CV. Should be applauded purely for the line:

“Is my work beautiful because I’m beautiful, or am I beautiful because my work’s beautiful? It’s probably a little bit of both…”
