Some of you may have recently read in the papers about the tragic slaughter of gorillas in Virunga National Park, in the Congo DRC. Well, this is the exact place that William (who wrote a blog about the curious incident of the log in our bog) has been doing so much work with Wildlife Direct. It’s great that they’re finally getting exposure in the national papers, but obviously terrible that it had to happen in these circumstances.
The good news is that there’s plenty you can do to help: a donation of $60 will buy the Rangers much needed patrol tents, $35 will buy them a pair of boots, $25 will provide them with much needed first aid kits, and $15 will provide them with rations. A lot of the Rangers run their own blogs (Atamato, Elie, Paulin, Joseph), which let you see exactly where your money’s going, and unlike many charities, what you donate goes straight to the field. So if you’re having difficulty sleeping, or just fancy doing some good to impress a lady, it’s well worth taking a look. (Alternatively you can help Will out and donate $100 for a Dictaphone he needs to keep him on top of things.)
You can also join Will’s cause on Facebook, where he’s already raised over $1000. Just click here, and then click “Gorilla Protection” in the bottom left.
On a personal note, hello Will – I hope all’s well. Please feel free to correct any factual inaccuracies I’ve made.

It’s not all doom and gloom, we just had a newborn mountain gorilla born yesterday into the Munyaga Family. Which is tremendous news.
Although, there is something a bit urban/metrosexual about this family: 3 Silverbacks, 1 male Blackback, and just 1 female. The leader is handicapped in both his arms and the Blackback was born bald.
Also, don’t tell anyone as there will be tears, but there has been a birth in this family before: http://stoodinthecongo.tumblr.com/post/9344222
Cheers Si
