Few will be as excited as myself to know that it is National Pie Week next week. Sometimes these National-Blutac-Week type things can go too far, but National Pie Week is too good to miss. Henceforth I share with you the proposed menu for next week:
Monday: Chicken and Veg. Mash, not chips.

Tuesday: Spinach & Feta Greek Pie. Not a massive fan, but it’s different.

Wednesday: Shepherd’s Pie. I don’t know if this counts, but you’d be foolish to omit this from any credible pie list. (I’m still not 100% on the difference between Shepherd’s Pie and Cottage Pie. That whole Lamb/Beef thing seems to be confused.)
Thursday: Steak & Kidney Pie. Chips. Thursday is a good day.

Friday: Fish Pie. Well. you’ve got to have a balanced diet, haven’t you?

While we’re on the subject of Pies, I’d like to point out to restaurants around the world that those ceramic dishes that you fill with stew and then stick a rubbish pastry lid on is not a pie. Not in my book anyway. The only exceptions to this are Shepherd’s/Cottage/Fish Pies, which have mashed potato tops.
Do YOU have a favourite Pie? What Pies will YOU be eating next week? If YOU were stuck on on a desert island with an infinite supply of five types of Pie, what would they be? And which pies would YOU eat for breakfast, lunch and supper?
Ahhh, lovely pies.
a matador pie for us please from http://www.pieminister.co.uk
lovely.
What about sweet pies? Do they get a look in on this delicious week? If so, I’ll be eating a nice piece of homemade apple pie with a slice of cheddar cheese.
Thanks for the link Ben&James. That is a tasty pie.
And sweet pies are very much a part of this week Emma – I’m just not a massive fan. I mean, if someone kidnapped my whole family and they were like “You have to eat this apple pie or we will hurt your whole family,” and I’m like “No no please don’t hurt my whole family,” and they’re like “WE’LL DO IT!!” and I’d be like “OK man, I’ll eat your apple pie. Mmmm… that’s quite nice.”
But that’s about the only scenario.
I hate to mention it but there’s a typo right at the beginning of your delicious pie blog. Sorry for being a bit crusty…
Good call Andy. And good use of pun too. (I think I’m meant to use one of those semi-colon bracket smiley face things here, but I can never bring myself to do it.)
Breakfast, lunch and dinner I’d like a great big mouthful of hairy p..! [A TRAPDOOR SUDDENLY OPENS BENEATH JOHN'S FEET, EJECTING HIM INTO HELL. SIMON COWELL, SHARON OSBOURNE, PETE WATERMAN, JUDGES AND PUNDITS OF WORLD OVER ALL STEP FORWARD AND SPIT INTO THE HOLE].
Right then. I’ve given it some thought now and I think I’m ready for the questions.
1. My favourite pie has to be my mother’s Chicken & Mushroom pie. A classic and, of course, nothing beats Mother’s cooking. Seriously. Nothing. And don’t diss my mother. OK?
2. Next week it will be mother’s Chicken & Mushroom pie. I think I’ve made the reasons abundantly clear.
3. On a desert island, the five pies shall be as follows. Firstly, mother’s Chicken & Mushroom pie. Enough said.
In second place would have to be 70′s supergroup Humble Pie. Peter Frampton for guitar-based inspiration, Steve Marriot for his foraging and carpentry prowess.
Third place goes to Tweety Pie for the comedic possibilities, while in fourth I’ll choose a Cutie Pie for the company.
Fifth and perhaps foremost would be an Enormous Great Powerboat pie. After all, it could be a long swim to home and mother’s Chicken & Mushroom pie.
4. For breakfast, lunch and supper it just has to be mother’s Chicken & Mushroom pie.
At breafast time, an addition of a slice of yummy toast. For lunch, what could be more appropriate than pie with a light side salad? While at suppertime a sliver of pie and a steaming mug of hot milk.
After all, any time is mother’s Chicken & Mushroom pie time.
I’ll be off now…
cottage = mince
shepherds = lamb
not sure what’s confusing about that.
now, when is a pie a pudding?
that’s confusing.
I think you’ll find that a pudding tends to be more suet based. As opposed to the pie’s more challenging pastry.
Have you been to Pi in Chorltonshire?
They do some ace pies, with all kind of weird unpielike ingredients in ‘em.
PORK!
Are you familiar with Stargazy pie? Now there’s a disturbing pie…
Your all pie eyed
Any thoughts on the North West regional delicacy, the Butter Pie?
Also, where do we stand on quiche? Has quiche been invited to this week’s party or it still hanging around the funeral buffet?
Andy – your mum’s pie sounds delicious. If I can say that without giggling childishly. And after googling Stargazy pie, I don’t think I’ll be trying it anytime soon. But I’ll let you know if that changes.
John – we’re gonna ban you from commenting on this blog if you don’t clean your act up. And I hope you enjoyed the holiday.
Tim – You mean beef, don’t you, not mince? My confusion begins with wikipedia, which probably explains a lot. I’ve always believed the whole lamb/ beef thing, but too many people/ companies use Shepherds Pie when they use beef. Wikipedia says it could be an example of folk etymology. Whatever that is.
Paul – no, but I should.
David – thank you.
Goddard – I think a National Quiche week would be good, but it’s too early in the year. I’m thinking June, maybe.
I enjoy a good pie and hopefully having a wedding pie – three tiers meat and potato, steak and onion then chicken and mushroom for the top with a pastry bride and groom.
Quiche week in June? Yer on! We should double-check it doesn’t clash with any omlette or frittata activity though…
