Straight Out of the Bottom Drawer

I’m not sure why, but when people have a good idea, it’s referred to as ‘coming out of the top drawer’. This seems a little odd to me. Generally top drawers are for staplers, pens, pencils, business cards, selotape, and those sticky page marker things that come in different colours that you think you need but you never actually use. I’m by no means saying that the way I arrange my drawers is industry standard – people are entitled to use their drawers for whatever purpose they seem fit, but a quick look through the top drawers of our creative department revealed a worrying lack of ideas.

Stephen Owen: darts, scissors, pens, erm… wet ones.

Simon Griffin: padlock, business cards, superglue, handcream (?).

Adam Rix: envelopes, wristband, can of tuna, old kiwi fruit.

We could go on, but fortunately for you we won’t. The point of all this is that on the whole, people in the agency tended to keep their ideas in their bottom drawers, not the top, and that’s where this idea for an invitation to a fashion show lunch & dinner has been until we recently found a client who wanted to use it.

They’re currently being made, so when they’re back we’ll post up some real pictures of them, rather than these rather dodgy pieces of photoshop. If you have any questions about drawers or plates, or would like to know why Ste has a pack of wet wipes in his drawer, then please feel free to ask.

  1. I’m with Ste on the Wet Ones. Mine are anti-bacterial, I’m thinking I may knit them together to create a protective shelter when swine flu sweeps through the building.

  2. Your drawers look like any other agency drawers :) There may be an international pattern for any drawers in this industry :) About that tuna can, I have a friend working in BBDO and she has like tuna cans and lemons as if a war would start and all the tuna cans would go away.

  3. Trust me Cat – if you knew Ste you really wouldn’t be with him on the wet ones. You’d be a long, long way away.
Delice – surely tinned salmon would go better with lemons?

  4. Fish is great with lemon, it says that in any cook book. I would try limes, they have a nicer flavour :) If interested, I have a great salad recipe with salmon, tinned or smoked :)
